Ideas For Making Over A Period Home
Rewiring and replumbing the house took longer than expected, but this gave us a really good chance to think about the look we wanted and find the perfect kitchen and bathroom. The kitchen was a bit of a mess and because we love to cook and also entrain our family and friends revamping the kitchen became our immediate priority. The kitchen and dining room were separate as in most traditional houses of the style we had bought. However, we liked the idea of an open plan kitchen and dining area so we had our builders remove a wall to create a large contemporary kitchen/dining room. The builders also installed a large patio window which made the new room even brighter and more attractive For the kitchen, we chose contemporary cream and burgundy gloss units, treated ourselves to a range cooker and laid slate floor tiles into the dining area. We painted the walls in a neutral grey colour which looked fantastic set against the gloss units and on the floor we went for dark grey quarry tiles to give a sophisticated modern feel to the room. To continue the sophisticated look in the living room we removed the old fire and wooden surround and replaced this with a modern living flame fire and a sleek black marble surround. We experimented quite a bit to get the right colour of paint for the living room walls. We initially wanted something neutral so that it would be easy to live with but eventually we decided on a deep red, almost burgundy shade which further emphasizes the sophisticated look we were aiming for. The finishing touch for the living room was the flooring. We ripped up the old dowdy carpet and were stunned – and delighted – to find that it concealed a beautiful hardwood floor that was in almost pristine condition. All we needed to do was get it professionally cleaned and waxed and it looked amazing. The bathroom upstairs presented us with a bit of a problem. It was built in almost an L shape which meant it was very difficult to make best use of the space. Because of this we decided to switch the water tank upstairs into the loft and fitted a small space saving and more economical boiler. We also fitted a new shower over the bath because there was no real room for a separate shower cubicle. We went for a rainfall ceiling-fitted shower and completed the look with pearlescent mosaic tiles that I found at a local tile shop
It has been hard work but the house now looks great. All we then needed to do was to pick up some appealing accessories to make the house feel a bit more lived in and welcoming. It may not be original but we love scented candles, in particular those produced by companies like Yankee candles and True Grace candles. they add a final decorative flourish to just about any room in the home.
