The Best Batteries For A Home Solar Power System
This article will talk about different types of batteries that can be used with solar power and which kind is the best to use. If you are planning to install a solar power system and you want to use electricity when the sun isn’t shining, you’ll require a way to store the power generated when the sun is shining. Batteries, when used together with a solar charge controller, will store electricity while it is being produced by the solar panels and then let you use the stored energy later. So, let’s talk about the different kinds of batteries and which type is best for solar.
Many people would probably first think of the new battery technologies used in devices like cell phones, laptop computers and also in hybrid cars. Those battery types are great for these devices, but aren’t a very good fit for solar as you’ll see.
These types of batteries are much smaller and weigh significantly less than older battery types. These newer types of batteries are, however, much more expensive than older battery technology. For devices like ipods, being small and light are more important than cost, so these newer technologies are a good fit in these devices.
You likely aren’t going to be carrying your solar power system around with you, however. What is going to be important is having as large a capacity as you can. So, much more important than size or weight will be cost per watt/hour of capacity.
If you want the best value for a given battery capacity, you can’t beat regular sealed lead acid. This is the same type of battery that is used in cars. For the same capacity battery, a sealed lead acid battery will be ½ to ¼ the price of the newer types. For toughness, low cost and safety, you can’t bead sealed lead acid batteries.
The most common voltage for sealed lead acid batteries is 12 volts. The most common voltages for home solar power systems are 12, 24 or 48 volts. These voltages can easily be obtained by connecting together the proper number of 12v batteries in series. By then putting these groups of batteries together in parallel, you can increase the total amount of power you are able to store and the number of appliances you can power.
For charging your 12 volt batteries, you should use a 12 volt solar charger. The charger will ensure the voltage going to the batteries is correct, and will prevent overcharging.
In order to power appliances you usually plug into the wall with batteries (or solar panels) you will need a power inverter. You’ll need a grid tie inverter if you plan to sell excess electricity back to the power company. If you don’t care about tying into the grid, or plan to live entirely off grid, a regular power inverter will work just fine and will also cost less than a grid tie inverter.
So there you have it. For a home solar power system, tried and true older battery technology is best. For home solar systems, sealed lead acid batteries are what you should use.
